Conversion Rate Optimisation
Why should you care about your conversion rate?
So you’ve built a website & you’re getting plenty of people to visit – you must be rich? happy? about to retire?
No? Why not! Could it be that very few of those visitors are actually taking action? Or at least the actions that you want them to take…
The second vital step (after Traffic) that every website needs to master is Conversion. It’s the vital ability of your website to get as many visitors as possible to complete an order form, send you their details, sign up for a newsletter. It’s vital & yet most websites fail miserably.
Why do most websites fail at conversion?
Usually a poor conversion rate is because of a few reasons:
- It might be too hard & complicated to complete the action (eg fill out a form) – or at least appear hard
- The call to action might be buried beneath pages of text – hard to find, impossible to see clearly
- There might not even be any obvious call to action at all (some websites are selling products but have no ‘add to cart’ button!)
- A prospect can’t clearly see any benefit in taking that action – what are the benefits for her? Are they compelling?
but you’re not going to settle for a site that doesn’t work are you? Would you like to start making some improvements?
So how can you improve your website today?
Don’t panic. There is hope. You don’t have to throw away your entire website and start from scratch. There are plenty of small changes or tweaks that you can make very quickly at little or no expense that, when built on top of each other, can have a dramatic improvement in your conversion rate. Start with this list of 52 ways to boost your conversion rate that you can give to your web designer or implement yourself.
How to find out your conversion rate…
Not sure how to find out what the conversion rate of your site is? Or even what this mysterious rate is to begin with??! Let’s walk through a simple example.
If your site were to attract 100 visitors today from various places: you might use Google AdWords, articles, social media, radio advertising, blogs – or all of those.
Of those 100, 10 make it to the ‘contact us’ page on your site & 1 person decides to leave his details.
The conversion rate of your overall site is 1%. 1 in 100 people took the action that you wanted – to leave their contact details.
It’s very feasible to double or triple that number by making simple changes. If you could get 2 in 100 people to leave their details, you’ve just produced double the results (& it costs exactly the same to send those 100 people to the site!). Or to put it another way, you’ve just effectively doubled your marketing budget. You got twice the results from the same spend, you doubled your return on investment (ROI).
