Will AdWords work for me?

Another great question! Well, like most great questions, the answer is a resounding: it depends!

Obviously you’re going to need a website in order to use AdWords effectively… and not just any website, you need a website that works.

How do you know if your website works?

You’ll measure a few simple stats each month (or each week if you prefer) that track the health of your site. Stats like:

  • how many people visit each day & where are they coming from
  • how long do they stay on the site
  • how many visitors ‘bounce’ straight off the site & leave after only looking at one page (for a few seconds)
  • and of course the biggie – how many visitors took action (bought something, or gave you their name & email address)

Once you know how many people took action, you can work out your site’s conversion rate – the key to knowing if you’re getting a positive or negative ROI on your marketing spend.

Just about the only type of business that Google doesn’t work too well for are sites that offer little or no benefit to the visitor.

If a visitor can’t see ‘what’s in it for them’ very quickly after arriving, they’ll leave & probably won’t be back. Would you pay for visitors like that – of course not. So as long as your site is offering a benefit, something of value – then AdWords is worth at least testing.

Perhaps you give away a list of tips & tricks, a video series or a free report in exchange for an email address. Maybe you offer a range of excellent services that practically sell themselves because of the way you’ve written about them or offer a free trial of your product or service. As long as you can measure – in one way or another – the actions of your visitors, then you can quickly tell if AdWords will pay off for you. (Find out how much AdWords costs)

But do be patient – if you’re going to setup your own AdWords account, realise that like most things it will take a while to get right. You’ll need to constantly tweak & adjust your keywords, bids, ads & more to ensure your getting that positive return.
