The Maths of Negative Keywords

Let’s assume for a moment that 1000 people are searching for your keywords. And to keep the maths easy, we’ll assume that 1 in 10 of them click – so we have 100 clicks & a click thru rate (CTR) of 10%

If – using negative keywords – we can stop showing your ads to 200 of those people… because those people are using phrases that aren’t relevant to what you’re selling (eg ‘hair loss treatment for dogs’ if you sell ‘hair loss treatment for humans). Now the interested 100 people still click, but your ads only show 800 times. Now your CTR% climbs to 100/800 or 12.5%. When your CTR goes up, your Quality Score goes up as well & that’s what causes your costs (average CPC) go down.

If we eliminate half of those unwanted impressions, then we’d only have 500 impressions & (assuming a perfect – fictional! – world) we’d still have 100 clicks, because the same 100 people would be interested in our relevant ad. Now that CTR rises all the way to 20% (100 out of 500), QS keeps going up & costs keep coming down.

Given that how much you pay for each click is hugely dependant on your CTR% this can save you a small fortune. You do this little bit of extra work once & it pays you back every single day!

So what’s the cost of the 9,000+ word spreadsheet?
