AdWords Location Targeting Upgrade

location-targetingGoogle AdWords is all about finding targeted prospects. Now it’s a lot easier to make sure that the people looking at your Ads are the right people – why? Location Targeting just got a long-overdue upgrade.

Now you can use the super-intuitive Google Maps to pick & choose the locations you want your Ads to show. As the screenshot shows – this is a huge help when designing campaigns for clients overseas! (Click image for larger view)
But how does it affect you? If you’ve been advertising up until now just in your local town, you’ll want to log in & check (on the map) where Google thinks that is. For instance, as a resident of Melbourne, I would assume that if I chose to show Ads in ‘Melbourne’ that that would cover a fair bit of ground. Not so according to the map – it’s really just the cbd (downtown for American readers!)

So what are your options? There are three..First option: choose more towns & cities. This is time consuming, but a lot easier now that you can actually see the places on a map.

Second option: choose a county or state (or entire country). This is the quick option, but may spread your budget too thin. If you don’t want people on the other side of your country to see your ads (because you can’t service them with your products/services) then this isn’t the best choice.

Third option: Use the Custom feature to draw the area you want to cover on the map – see below.

If you’d like a video detailing exactly how to do any of this, please let me know & I’ll get one up asap.

Have a profitable day! Mike
